It still draws people for the same reason today. You can fill a jug from the public tap for free, soak in a private Roman-style bath, or book a full spa treatment inside the historic bathhouse. It’s the one thing every first-time visitor should do, and it’s an easy walk from Rivendell.
Eat & Drink
Berkeley Springs punches above its weight for a town this size, and if you’re staying at Rivendell, nearly all of it is a short walk from your door. For a special dinner, Lot 12 Public House does seasonal, farm-to-table American cooking, while Ravenwood Pub serves up elevated versions of pub classics in a cozy setting. Angus & Ale is the spot for a good steak, and The Naked Olive leans Mediterranean, with charcuterie boards and craft cocktails that make it a favorite for a slower evening. For mornings, Fairfax Coffee House is the easy answer — pastries, sandwiches, and locally roasted coffee.
If you’d rather sip than dine, Cold Run Valley Winery pours in a countryside setting just outside town (this one’s a short drive), and Berkeley Springs Brewing Company keeps a rotating lineup of Appalachian-style beers on tap downtown.

Downtown is small enough to wander on foot, and if you’re staying at Rivendell, all of it is within easy walking distance. There’s more packed in than you’d expect: the Museum of Berkeley Springs covers the town’s history and its springs; the Ice House Artists Co-Op is worth a browse for local art and handmade goods; and the Berkeley Springs Antique Mall is a genuine rabbit hole if you like vintage finds. The Star Theatre hosts live music and film screenings in a beautifully restored historic building, and if you’re around after dark, the Morgan County Observatory runs stargazing programs worth building a night around.
And yes — Berkeley Springs has a castle. Built in the late 1800s and perched with mountain views over the town, it now hosts historical tours and private events throughout the year. Venture Out to Great Cacapon
About twenty minutes from downtown, Great Cacapon is a different kind of quiet — a small river village where the Cacapon meets the Potomac, with none of the foot traffic of Berkeley Springs. It’s an easy day trip from Rivendell, or your home base if you’re staying at our unit there.
The main draw is Prospect Peak, a hiking overlook with sweeping valley views that’s popular enough to have its own small following among regional hikers — well worth the climb if you’re up for it. Down on the water, outfitters run kayaking, canoeing, and tubing trips on the Cacapon River for anyone who wants to spend an afternoon on the water without needing their own gear. Beyond that, there’s not much to “do” — which, if you’re after a place to unplug rather than sightsee, is exactly the point.
